The world’s largest social enterprise focused summit was back in Mumbai in its fifth year. One of Intellecap’s key initiatives, Sankalp Forum made this edition even more seminal by forging a landmark partnership with Villgro’s Unconvention, marking the first step in bringing about consolidation in the space in India. The Sankalp Unconvention Summit had more new significant initiatives like the first Sankalp Unconvention Scholarships designed that supported social entrepreneurs' to travel, registration and stay. Grants valued at INR 1.25 million were set aside for this endeavor.

With a focus on “Looking Beyond Impact: Seeking Transformational Change”, the Summit convened  over 1000 delegates over 3 days to discuss and debate the evolving role of social businesses and the impact investing industry in changing lives of people at the base of the pyramid.

Apart from thought-leading discourses and mentor-mentee connects, the Summit included global participation from SE Asia, Sub Saharan Africa and post conflict zones like Afghanistan to discuss how their regions can learn from each other and collaborate more effectively. The event also witnessed the landmark launch of the Council of Impact Equity Funds, a regulatory body of impact investors, and the launch of the second Indian social enterprise landscape report. Entitled Pathways to Progress, this report was brought out by Intellecap’s Research team based on guidance from the Sankalp Forum.

Key strategic partners of the Summit included the International Finance Corporation, Adelphi Consulting, G – 20 Challenge, USAID, Department For International Development and GIZ. Speakers at the summit included Ms Susanne Dorasil from the German ministry of Economic Cooperation & Development (BMZ), impact investing champion Mr Antony Bugg-Levine, Omidyar Network’s Mr Jayant Sinha, and CMD of Exim Bank Mr TCA Ranganathan.

Like every year, the Summit brought several social enterprises to the forefront through its flagship Sankalp Awards. Grants and prizes totaling INR 4.3 million were given out to a select set of enterprises that were shortlisted after an intensive evaluation by leading global venture funds.

The Sankalp Unconvention Summit will be back next year from April 9 – 11, 2014.
